The Dobermann Pinschers originated in Germany in the late 19th century, bred mostly as guard dogs. Their exact origins are unknown, but they are thought to be a mixture of many dog breeds, including the Rottweiler, Black and Tan Terrier, and the German Pinscher.
Their appearance is elegant and their style is athletic; the Dobermann is also intelligent, alert and loyal. They are a courageous guard dog, as well as a beloved family companion.
Once upon a time, at the end of the 19th century, there was a tax collector by the name of Louis Dobermann, who lived in the town of Apolda, in the district of Thüringen in Germany. His work, collecting money, was dangerous because there were bandits around who could attack him as he made his rounds.
As Dobermann was also the town's dog catcher, he often took a dog along for protection. Dobermann started breeding dogs with the idea of a faithful companion and protector in mind. The result of his breeding experiments was the early Dobermann Pinscher.
There is no record of which dogs Dobermann used to create the breed, but it is speculated that the Rottweiler, German Pinscher, and Black and Tan Terrier were part of the mix. The Dobermann was first exhibited in 1876, where it was received with great enthusiasm.
A super-intelligent and super-active dog - that's what you get when you get a Dobermann Pinscher. You also get a very loyal, reliable dog that is playful and fun with the family. They are a natural protector who will not hesitate to act if they think their family is threatened, but they are not aggressive without reason.
The Doberman loves to be busy, both physically and mentally. They learn quickly, and training is easy. Because they learn so quickly, it is a challenge to keep the lessons fresh and interesting. They can have their own ideas about things, but usually they are not overly stubborn or headstrong with an owner who leads consistently and kindly.
