The Appenzeller Mountain Dog originated as an all-round farm dog breed, which stayed busy herding cattle, guarding the farm, and pulling carts in their native Switzerland. Today's Appenzellers still have the energy, intelligence, and confidence that makes them valuable working dogs.

History

The Appenzeller Mountain Dog is an ancient breed that has been used in Switzerland for thousands of years for herding, guarding, and general farm work. The breed was recognised as an indigenous Swiss breed to be preserved in 1897, and the first breed club was founded in 1906 by Dr Albert Heim.

It is believed that the Appenzellers, like the other three Swiss mountain dogs, descended from the Roman Molossers which were crossed with the native Swiss dogs.

Personality

Appenzeller Mountain Dogs are known for their energetic behaviour. They love to run, jump, and play! Mix a friendly personality and affectionate nature and you have a great asset for a family with children. Keep in mind that because this dog was bred as a cattle dog, it has a strong instinct for protecting its territory and herding.
