World Rabies Day – why rabies vaccination still matters when travelling

Updated:

September 28 is World Rabies Day. You might think rabies is an issue far away, but once you travel with your dog, European Union rules apply.

Across the entire European Union, a valid rabies vaccination is mandatory. Without it, your pet will not be allowed to cross the border.

How does it work?

  • The first vaccination can be given from 12 weeks of age.

  • It only becomes valid after 21 days.

  • The duration of validity depends on the vaccine used. Each valid vaccination or booster is recorded in the EU Pet Passport.

So, even though rabies no longer exists in Belgium, the vaccination remains essential for safe and carefree travel with your dog.
