Bathing and brushing: the golden combo for a healthy coat

Bathing and brushing: the golden combo for a healthy coat

Updated:

Many owners ask us how often to bathe or brush their dog. The answer is simple: regularly – and best when combined! A shiny, healthy coat doesn’t just happen by itself. With a little care, you can avoid tangles, itching and skin problems.

Why combine them?

  • Bathing removes dirt, dust, dead hair and odors.

  • Brushing spreads the natural oils, keeps the skin healthy and prevents loose hairs from turning into tangles.

Together they not only give your dog a fresh look, but also help maintain healthy skin and reduce the risk of hot spots.

How often to bathe?

There is no strict rule – it depends on coat type, lifestyle and skin condition.

  • Long or curly coats: about once a month
(e.g. Maltese, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Poodle, Cavapoo, Maltipoo, Cockapoo)

  • Double coats: every 2–3 months, more often during shedding season
(e.g. Sheltie, Pomeranian, Corgi, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd)

  • Short coats: every 2–4 months
(e.g. French Bulldog, Dachshund, Beagle, Pug)

πŸ‘‰ Always use a dog shampoo – human products upset your dog’s skin balance.

Bathing tips

  • Use lukewarm water and prevent slipping.

  • Protect eyes and ears.

  • Rinsing thoroughly is more important than lathering for long.

  • Dry well with a towel or a blow dryer on low heat.

Brushing to prevent tangles

A dry coat tangles less, but brushing remains the key step:

  • Long and curly coats: several times a week, sometimes daily
(e.g. Maltese, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Cavapoo, Cockapoo, Maltipoo)

  • Double coats: weekly, more during shedding
(e.g. Golden Retriever, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Keeshond, Corgi)

  • Short coats: 1–2 times a week is usually enough
(e.g. French Bulldog, Beagle, Dachshund, Pug)

πŸ‘‰ Always work layer by layer (line brushing) and finish with a comb to check for knots.

Do’s & don’ts for tangles

βœ… Always detangle before bathing.
βœ… Work gently from tips to roots, use a detangling spray if needed.
❌ Never pull hard or cut blindly near the skin. If the coat is matted, a groomer is the safest solution.

When to pay extra attention?

  • Ears: always dry after bathing.

  • Painful tangles, bald patches, smelly wounds or severe itching → see your vet.

πŸ‘‰ With a little routine and the right approach, your dog’s coat will stay not only beautiful but also healthy.
