History

The Bolognese originated in Bologna, a northern city in Italy. It is a very old breed, thought to be thousands of years old. The first mention of the breed dates back to 1200. It was kept as a companion dog for the nobility and the wealthy. Some historically famous lovers of this dog include Catherine the Great of Russia, Maria Theresa of Austria and the Marquise de Pompadour, mistress-en-titre of Louis XV of France.

As a member of the Bichon family, it is unclear from which breed the Bolognese descends. Some experts believe that this breed is closely related to the Maltese.

Personality

The Bolognese is entertaining and affectionate and is a wonderful companion dog. He is not only playful and curious, but also likes to be the centre of attention when he gets an audience. Do not be fooled by its small size - the Bolognese will impress you with its tenacity.

The most important thing for a Bolognese is to be with you and make you happy. What a noble job! He loves to sit by your side and on your lap.
