Chiweenie

The Chiweenie is a mixed breed dog - a cross between the Chihuahua and Dachshund breeds. Compact, energetic and loyal, these pups inherit some of the best traits of both their parents.

Chiweenies have several names, including Choxie, Weeniehuahua, German Taco, and Mexican Hot Dog.

History

The Chiweenie dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders began deliberately mixing Chihuahuas and Dachshunds in the late 1990s, probably in North America.

Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to minimise the back problems often seen in Dachshunds with their long bodies. They continued to create Chiweenies as demand for the mixed breed puppies increased.

Personality

Many Chiweenie enthusiasts describe the personality of these dogs as "feisty." Although they are the size of an average lapdog, their high energy level means they probably prefer a game of fetch to a cuddle session.

Some Chiweenies may have a prey drive, although most seem to have lost the hunting instincts of their Dachshund parents. They do, however, love to bark. Some people might even call them "yappy". If you want a watchdog that will alert you to anyone who might approach your door, you can't do much better than the Chiweenie.
