The French Bulldog has a long history as a companion dog. Created in England as a miniature Bulldog, they accompanied English lace-makers to France, where they got their "Frenchie" nickname.

In addition to being companions, they once served as excellent rat-catchers, but today their job is to be fantastic family friends and show dogs. Even flat dwellers and first-time pet owners will love this affectionate breed.

History

The French Bulldog originated in England and was created to be a toy version of the Bulldog. The breed was very popular among lacewomen in the city of Nottingham and when many lacewomen emigrated to France for better opportunities, they naturally brought their little bulldogs with them.

The French Bulldog flourished in France and Europe, and its charm was soon discovered by Americans as well. The United States saw their first French Bulldog at the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1896. The breed was soon nicknamed "Frenchie," and it is still an affectionate name used today.

Personality

This is a smart, loving dog that wants and needs to spend a lot of time with its people. The French Bulldog is a happy adventurer and tolerates training well if it is done in a positive manner with lots of food rewards, compliments, and games.
